Once upon a time there was a little creature who thought she was a fly. Her name was Marly.

It all started when a strong wind swept her up and carried her away, far away from anything she had ever known. Thump! She hit a wall. It was actually the fence post near a big, pile of cow pies. Marla had landed in the Land of the Cow Pies.

Soon, she was surrounded by a group of black, little creatures who were curious about her.
They asked her who she was and she said, I dont know. They asked her where she came from and Marly said, From over there.

The flies thought for awhile and finally said, You are little and have wings; therefore, you must be a fly, but a very strange and odd-looking fly you are.

Then they decided, Since you are a fly, and even though you are odd, you can stay with us in the Land of the Cow Pies.

So there she stayed.

Marly was happy. But not really.

You buzz too loudly. One would say.

Youre funny-looking. Another would say.

Marly didnt really like all the cow pies. It smelled bad and the air was stuffy near them.

Come on Marly. Her friends would say. Lets go hang out with the cows! Worse yet, they would say, Marly, come with us there is a big, dead cow in the field and she smells delicious!

Marly politely replied, No, thank you. She did not care for such things as smelly dead cows. Instead Marly liked to fly to the top of the fence post and gaze at
the wonderful views. She could see for a quite a ways. In the distance there was a green field with colorful flowers. There were cool breezes and the sun always seemed to shine over there.

Something deep inside Marly longed to go to all of the colorful flowers. But she dare not.
That land is forbidden! the chief fly would tell Marly. Only silly and crazy creatures go there, creatures who are not flies.

Time went by.

Marly was happy. But not really.

Sometimes the other flies tried to change Marly to look and act more like themselves.

You need to get rid of that awful buzzing sound, they would say, and sound more like us!

I will try. said Marly. No matter how hard she tried, Marly could not sound exactly like the flies.

You need to look more like us. sometimes they would say. We will like you more if you do.

This made Marly feel very sad indeed, because no matter how hard she tried, she just could not change the way she looked.

Weeks passed by. Marly learned to accept the way things were. She changed her buzzing sound to a low murmur. After all, she didnt want to upset the other flies. She worked twice as hard and kept herself busy.

Marly was happy. But not really.

One day, as Marly was sitting on her fence post, a strange and beautiful creature stopped by. He liked Marly and asked her to follow him to a different land.

Something deep inside her wanted to go. But she sadly replied, No thank you. I cant go with you. I belong in the Land of Cow Pies.

The stranger told her, Why, you could be going for the honey! But you only want to stay with smelly cow pies! You must be a fly, after all, an odd-looking fly you are.

Marly had no idea what he was talking about. What what is honey?? She asked.

But the beautiful creature, impatient with her, had already buzzed off. He just had too much to do to spend time with a creature who looked like him, but acted like a fly.

As time went on Marly grew a little more comfortable being a fly. In fact, she no longer noticed the bad smells and the lack of fresh air around the cows and all the pies left behind by them.

Marly was happy. But not really.

She would often wonder, Why was my buzzer not buzzing as loudly as it used to?

You see, her buzzer had a different sound to it now, one of tiredness. Even her wings became heavier and she found herself flying dangerously low to the ground.

However, time passed and Marly became more and more accepted and even loved by all the flies who lived in the Land of the Cow Pies. You see, Marly would sometimes listen for hours to any fly who needed to talk. She sang to flies who were sad. She was even forgiving and patient with flies who sometimes mistreated her or called her names like, Busy Buzzy Barly. Marly figured that it was these flies who needed kindness the most and so she was kind to them.

Marly was happy. But not really.

One day, Marly was attracted to a small pink rosebud growing on the little bush next to the fence post. The bud had appeared almost as if by magic. On the bud was a tiny dew drop. There she saw, for the first time, her reflection. She sat there for a long time, gazing at what she saw in the little dew drop. Suddenly Marly realized, Why, I look a little like the pretty creature I saw one day! I have bright yellow strips and wings as delicate as flower petals!

Why, maybe Im not a fly after all, she said, Just maybe, I am something... else!

Indeed Marly was something else. She was a bee, a beautiful, lovely bee!

Marly buzzed with delight, turning circles and somersaults in the air! Even her buzzing sounded different now and more vibrant than ever. She said to herself, I am different ! Why, Im not really a fly! she exclaimed at the top of her buzz. I am something else!

Just then a little caterpillar, asleep on the rosebush, woke up. Why are you waking me up with all this commotion? she asked her.

Marly told the sleepy caterpillar that she was no longer a fly. She was something else.

The sleepy little caterpillar suddenly exclaimed, Why, of course you are not a fly! You are a bee.

Indeed, thought Marly, with joyful glee. I am a bee? A bee!! Whats a bee?

A bee, said the sleepy caterpillar, is a lovely little creature who can turn nectar from flowers into honey!

The sleepy caterpillar further explained to Marly, You will never be happy living in the Land of the Cow Pies. Flies belong there, not bees! he told her. You need to go to where there are flowers and other bees.

The caterpillar continued, In fact, you are needed by the flowers to help pollinate the flowers.
Leave the Land of the Cow Pies, exclaimed the sleepy little caterpillar. Then she fell back to sleep. You see, the little caterpillar was getting ready for a big change herself. She would turn into something very beautiful someday, so she needed rest.

Marly realized that the caterpillar was right. She could no longer live in the land of the Cow Pies. She had a new purpose and she needed to now be who she really was.

Theres no turning back now, Marly said to herself. So off she flew to say goodbye to her fly friends.

The flies were all sad to see Marly leave, but they wanted her also to be happy. Goodbye, they said, sadly to their odd but kind friend.

Then, little Marly buzzed with all her might away from all she had ever known in the Land of the Cow Pies.
Braver and braver she became as she flew off towards the forbidden land, the land she had seen from the top of her fence post. She remembered the green fields and colorful flowers, the land of cool breezes where the sun always shined.

As she arrived, she was immediately greeted by other creatures who were yellow and had black stripes like she did! They buzzed loudly like she could! They loved her even more than the flies and all she had to do was to just be herself! In fact, it turned out that they told her that someday she would actually be a very important bee, called a Queen Bee! Marly had so much to learn about herself in this new, wonderful Land of the Flowers.

From then on, Marly was very busy and doing what she loved to do. She was dearly loved by all, even the flies who never forgot her kindness.

And so, Marly buzzed loudly and happily ever after, and she was truly happy.

 This time, she really was.
