I loved my Grandma. She was always so loving and kind, and when my parents had to go away, I lived with her. I was very happy.

One day I said to my Grandma, "I would really, really like a little pony."

She smiled and said, "Oh my dear child, I would love to get a pony for you, but they cost so much money, more money than I have."
So I said, "Well, if we save and save, then one day we will have enough money!"

From then on, that is what we did. We put pennies into a big jar when ever we could. Sometimes I would find a penny in the street when we went for a walk, or maybe somebody would throw a pop can out of their car. I would pick up the pop cans, and once a week my Grandma and I would go to a place where they gave you money for empty cans. All that money would go into our big jar.

This carried on for about six months, then one day when my Grandma came to walk me home from school, she said, "I've got a surprise for you at home!"
"What is it? Oh, do tell me! Is it a pony?" I asked excitedly.
"You will just have to wait and see," Grandma said, smiling. "It is a sort of pony, on the front porch."
When we got near home, I ran ahead, excited. Rushing up the pathway, onto the porch, I skidded to a stop.
There it was. My heart sank in disappointment. It was a pony alright, but a wooden one! A rocking horse. Oh no!
My Grandma came up the path as quickly as she could, a happy smile on her face.
"Oh, how can I make her unhappy?" I thought to myself, so I made myself smile, and said, "It's beautiful, Grandma."
"I'm so glad you like it," she said happily. "It took such a long time to find. I know it is not a real one, like you wanted, but it is all we can really afford."

So another six months went past, but I still collected pennies and pop cans. Every now and then I would go out on the porch and ride on my wooden pony, imagining what it would be like to ride a real one.

Then one day when my Grandma came to get me from school she said, "Today we are going for a longer walk home. We are going to go to Mr. Jones' farm."
"Why, Grandma?" I asked, puzzled. It was quite a long way to his farm, and usually we only went when we needed vegetables, or eggs.
"You'll see," Grandma said with a smile.

So we walked. Almost an hour later we walked up the long road to the farmhouse, and there was Farmer Jones, waiting for us.
By now I was so excited I could hardly stand still! I knew that something special was going to happen, but what?
Farmer Jones smiled, and said, "I think you should both come with me."
We walked out to the barn, and went in through a side door. As my eyes got used to the dimmer light inside the barn, I could see a small black and white pony tied to a post, and it was looking at us as we came in.
"You see that pony?" asked Farmer Jones.
"Yes!" I said breathlessly.
"That is your new pony," he said quietly.
I looked at Grandma, who smiled and nodded.
I let out such a shriek of joy that the pony jumped, looking at me nervously.
"Whoa! Whoa!" said Farmer Jones quickly. "You'll have to be a lot quieter and calmer than that!"
I caught my breath, then apologized. "I'm sorry! I did not mean to scare her. I still can't believe it!"
Grandma smiled and said, "Of course, my dear. But now you should go to the pony calmly, and say hello."

Well, the next hour was the happiest of my life, and soon the pony, who I called 'Angel' was happy to let me stroke her.
Finally Farmer Jones said, "Your Grandma has given me all the money you saved, to pay for the pony. I will let you keep her here on the farm, but on one condition. You must come by at least four times a week to ride her, brush her, and clean out her stable. Otherwise the deal is off!"
I walked over to him, shook hands with him, and said, "I know we did not have a lot of money, so I appreciate everything so much! Of course I will look after her!"
Then I went over to my Grandma and gave her a big hug.
I learned one thing that day: if you want something very much, and are prepared to work and save hard for it, it will come. And something else - sometimes people can be nicer than you think!
