Leaf was bored. He had been hanging on the same tree for such a long time and he was fed up. Leaf wanted adventure, excitement, fun!
My life is SO boring! he said to nobody in particular. All I do is hang here, day after day.
Leaf didnt change colour in Autumn as the leaves in other trees did. He never turned orange or gold. He just stayed the same shade of green. Not light green, not dark green just green.
Leaf looked at the birds flitting from tree to tree and sighed.
I wish I could fly, he said. How wonderful to be high up in the sky, above the tree tops.
Leaf saw ducks swimming back and forth across the pond.
I wish I could swim, he said. How nice it would be to lie flat for once and to feel the cool water.
Leaf watched the dogs that came with their owners to run in the park.
I wish I could run around, he said. How exciting to be close to the ground instead of hanging on a branch.
Every day birds flew in and out of the trees, ducks swam on the pond and dogs ran around the park. But, for Leaf, nothing changed. Leafs life stayed exactly the same. Until one day . . .a big storm began to build.
The sky turned dark and everything went very still. Then a ferocious wind began to blow, stronger and faster than any wind had ever blown before.
The trees bent over and their branches swayed back and forth.
Leaf bounced around as the wind blew harder and harder. He flapped up and down and from side to side, faster . . . and faster . . . and faster . . . until he snapped right off his branch and sailed up into the sky.

He twirled around and around, higher and higher, as the wind continued to blow.
Leaf felt a bit frightened but then he realised something.
Im flying! he shouted. Im really flying! Im high up in the sky, above the tree tops!
The wind lifted Leaf higher and further away from the tree where hed lived all his life. Soon the wind had blown Leaf far away from the park.
He flew over houses and gardens, spinning and twirling as he went.
Leaf laughed. This is so much fun!
But after a time the wind began to die down and Leaf found himself going lower and lower. As the wind turned into a gentle breeze, Leaf glided into a garden and headed straight for a large swimming pool.
He hovered over the blue water for a few seconds but then the wind stopped completely and Leaf fell into the pool.
He gasped as he hit the cold water. It felt so strange to be floating on water instead of hanging in a tree but then he realised something.
Im swimming!
Leaf relaxed and let the water support his body.
This feels amazing! he said.
He lay back and looked up at the sky which was clearing after the storm. Soon the sun came out and Leaf enjoyed the feel of its warmth as he floated in the pool.

He closed his eyes and was almost asleep when he felt something dragging him through the water. Leaf opened his eyes and saw a man standing beside the pool. He was holding a net on a long pole and he had captured Leaf in the net!
Leaf felt the mesh as it dragged him across the pool. The man lifted the net out of the water and emptied it on to the grass.
Leaf fell out of the net and landed on a pile of other leaves. He lay there shocked and surprised.
The man put down his net and picked up a rake.
What a mess, said the man, as he began to rake. There are leaves everywhere after that storm.
Leaf was dragged across the lawn and on to a bigger pile of leaves. He felt scared and, at that moment, he wished he was still hanging on the tree in the park. He wondered what would happen next.
When the man finished raking, he went off to fetch a large hessian bag to put the leaves in. While he was gone a dog ran into the garden.
The dog jumped around in excitement and barked at the pile of leaves. Then it lay down and rolled in the leaves.
The dogs fur was wet and curly and Leaf stuck to the dogs back.
SHOO! yelled the man who had returned with the hessian bag. Go away you pesky animal. How am I supposed to clean up this yard if you roll in the leaves?
The dog ran away from the man, with Leaf stuck firmly to its back. Leaf bounced and jiggled as the dog trotted along the footpath. It felt funny.
Hey, Im running! he laughed. Well, Leaf wasnt actually running but he was attached to something else that was running. (And at least he was close to the ground instead of hanging on a branch.)

The dog turned into another garden where a small boy was sitting on an old tyre swing.
Hi, Rex, said the boy. Where have you been? Ive been looking for you.
The boy climbed off the swing and patted the dog who wagged its tail.
You have leaves all over you, laughed the boy. Come here and Ill get them off. Mum wont let you in the house if you have stuff stuck to your coat.
The boy brushed the other leaves out of the dogs fur but he picked up Leaf and held him.
I like this one, he said. Its a nice shape. I think Ill make a picture with it.
The boy went inside and sat at his desk. He got out some paper and glue and a few other things.
He smeared some glue on the paper and sprinkled some glitter on top. Next he glued on some shapes that hed cut out of coloured paper.
I think Ill put the feather that I found yesterday on the picture too, he said.
Finally he picked up Leaf. He rolled the glue stick over Leafs back, then stuck him firmly to the paper beside the feather, coloured shapes and glitter.
Then he went to show his mother.
What a beautiful picture! she said. Ill put it on the front of the fridge so everyone can see it. And she did.
Leaf no longer hangs in a tree. Now he hangs on the fridge where he can watch the little boy and his family going about their day. He sees visitors come and go and all of them comment on the lovely picture with the nice shaped leaf.
Sometimes Leaf misses his tree and the park, but then he realises how lucky he has been. In his life he got to fly, swim and run and not all leaves get to do that!
