Ram Verma paced his room irritably. And he felt that he very much deserved to be irritated. It was 10 years 10 YEARS since he had invested in that crackpot inventor and what had he got out of it? Nothing but excuses and more excuses. It was all very fine when he was earning lakhs every month, but now with all his expenses, the dowry he had to give for his daughters weddings and his wastrel sons he was required to support, he had just managed to stay in the rich class. Suddenly his phone rang. Praying that it would be the inventor with some good news, he picked it up.

Sir, it works. Ram Verma put his finger into his ear and removed some accumulated wax.

What is that, Murali, speak up, I can barely hear you.

Sir, it works, repeated Murali again, simply and unemotionally, his voice displaying none of the toil and sleepless nights of the past 10 years.

Ahhhhh!!! You mean it really works?????

Yes.

Wa..wawait right there!! Im coming, Im coming!!, screamed out Ram Verma putting on his coat and hitching up his dhoti. Mrs. Garg watering her plants outside saw a blur streak past her, causing her to shake her head slightly and wonder for the hundredth time whether it really wasnt time to move their house.

Im here, gasped out Ram Verma, show me the invention. Oh my God! I cant believe youve done it. I will become the God of the 21st centuryrich beyond my dreams

Sir, please step outside and I will demonstrate.

Show me, Show me SHOW ME!!!, roared Ram Verma hopping on his toes in his impatience.

Murali merely raised an eyebrow and pressed the button. For an instant there was a greenish-yellow glow, and then Muralis house disappeared. Ram Verma blinked and then spun around, expecting the house to have somehow appeared behind him like some kind of maniacal jack-in-the-box. Your house, it..its gone!!

Yes sir, that is, as you may recollect the purpose of this invention. If you will peer downwards, you will observe a tiny structure the shape of a matchbox. That is my house.

Ram wonderingly picked up the tiny miniature house and looked at the little curtains and the tiled roof just like a dolls house! He could so easily crush it in his hands and then this arrogant inventor would have no place to go. He put it back and Twang! The house had shot up again, looking unchanged for all the experimentation.

Ram Verma walked home slowly, chewing the right sleeve of his shirt as he always did when he was thinking. The possibilities were limitless Anywhere you had to go, there was no question of packing up, no paying expensive hotels - and this was only the tip. Cities could be re-constructed and better designed, space would no longer be an issue and if people could be shrunk, how many more possibilities there wereooooh!! It was most unimaginably exciting.untold wealth would be his!!!

The next day saw Ram Verma arrive at Muralis house bright and early. Get the coffee out my good man, we have business to discuss, chirped Ram Verma striding past a groggy Murali and plonking himself on the sofa.
Now look here, you have done extremely good work and we will both be rich. I have brought along this document which entitles you to a whopping 10 % of the money I make, and with a flourish he produced the legal document.

10% sir? But the original agreement was 50-50 and I would hardly think that you would be a person who would go back on his word. We had a deal

Deal-shmeel, said Ram Verma crudely and loftily. You know 10 % will fetch you huge profits something you could never have dreamt of for the next five lifetimes without my investments. So sign this quickly my man, pass me the remote and Ill be on my way.

The inventor stared at him out of his unfathomable eyes for a second, quietly took the pen and signed on the place indicated. Now the remote, breathed Ram Verma hardly able to believe his luck. Murali silently got up, went into his room and handed over the remote, as courteous as ever.

Ram Verma fairly danced back to his house and screamed for all his family members to come outside which they did, cursing audibly at being woken up. Poof! The house had vanished. Everyone stood shell-shocked even the most dim-witted amongst them knew that this was not an ordinary invention. And now watch Voila! said Ram Verma grandly, pressing the other button. But of course, nothing happened. Ram Verma sadly shook his head, he had wisdom enough to know that Murali would have left long back his house in his pocket.

Ram Verma of course, lost it after that. In later years, he could be seen walking with a stoop and inspecting the ground for tiny curtained houses searching for a Murali he would never find so know this, if ever you see a bespectacled man, raking the ground with his eyes while chewing on his right sleeve, it is none other than that poor fool - Sri Ram Verma.
