    Tourists in Chinchillatown

					by Tim J. Myers

Arko Octogen was the oldest chinchilla in town. But no one believed him when he came shouting that extraterrestrials had just landed on the golf course.
But there they were, walking right up Main Street. Told ya! Arko burbled.
They look like us," little Gurv Gunjer said. "Cept their whiskers shine like lumimum foil.
When the space chinchillas got to the town square, they opened up chests of free candywhich was weird but delicious. Everyone cheered, and Mayor Muffleby put on his top hat to welcome them. In fact, the mayor and the city council were rubbing their paws with glee, because everybody knew that extraterrestrials bring touristsand tourists bring money!
Chinchillatown needed moneyespecially for the school. When it rained, the roof leaked; when it snowed, the furnace would shut down and the kids had to wear coats and gloves. The chimneys were tottery, the paint was peeling, and the history books were so old they ended with the reign of Lettuce Eat VIII, the last chinchilla king.
So everyone pitched in to make the space-chinchillas feel at home. Gave them beds to sleep in and peas and plenty of lettuce.
Soon tourists came flocking. And Chinchillatown merchants were selling postcards and fur brushes and exercise wheels and a hundred other things stamped with pictures of the space-chinchillas. The tourists also paid for hotels and restaurants and postage stamps and soda pop and beef jerkyit was a bonanza! So the town council signed a contract with a construction company to build a new school.
The space-chinchillas did their part too. Twice weekly theyd give lectures at City Hall, showing pictures of their home-planet Chintuu and explaining how its government and postal system and fast-food restaurants worked. They even demonstrated the electromagnetic powers of their shiny whiskerswhich, they explained, was why none of the TVs or radios or CD players or iPods in Chinchillatown had worked since their arrival.
On any given day you could see them picnicking, going to movies at the Chin-aplex, playing basketball at the hoop behind Furry Gilmans bowling alley, or shopping.
So the town was shocked when their leader Zigmucks announced theyd be rocketing back to Chintuu the following Thursday.
Everyone gasped. Mayor Muffleby blurted, Youre LEAVING?! Little Gurv looked at them with tears in his eyes. Dont go, space-chillas! he blubbered. Were friends!
Dont get me wrong," Zigmucks said. "We like it here! But weve got to get back. Just like you do after a vacation.
	VACATION?! everyone echoed.
Of course!! Zigmucks answered. We only got three weeks off this yearand I still have yardwork to catch up on
Chinchillatown was in trouble. The Mayor had used all the tourist money for the new school. And there were still huge bills to pay.
And in fact, everyone had come to love the space-chinchillas.
The townsfolk tried everything. The Mayor set up a Special Committee to Entice Our Space-Chinchilla Brothers and Sisters to Remain, and there were speeches and letters and emails, and the kids from the elementary school, their whiskers wrapped in aluminum foil, even stood in front of the starship and sang Abide With Me." But nothing worked. The space-chinchillas were polite but firm; they had to go.
The only one who stayed optimistic was Arko. He kept cackling, Theyll stay! No one believed him.
Theyre leaving! Buxton Potbottom the banker would whine. And well all have to move away. Probably end up living with rabbitsor toads!
Theres nothing wrong with rabbits or toads! Dr. Rumpinfuzz insisted.
I know, Buxton sighed. I just dont want to leave my hometown.
Finally Thursday came, and the townsfolk trudged to the starship to give their new friends a hearty sendoffwell, not exactly hearty. Oh, they brought picnic food and farewell bannersbut it was all pretty gloomy.
Still, they all sat down and ate together, thinking about that moment when theyd have to shake paws and say Nice to know ya.
After dinner, a band set up, though no one felt much like music. Then Bushy Briks stepped to the mike. This is supposed to be a party, aint it? Me and my sister Rose are on guitarsBob Scruffbellys on bassthis is Zepheriah Ut on drumsLittle Wick here plays keyboard. We call ourselves Rose Hips and the Sugar Beats, and we just want to say thanks to you space-chinchillas and were sorry youre goin. A one and a two and a
The guitars started snapping, the drums came pounding, the bass started walking, the keyboard dropped in with infectious chords, and Rose was soon wailinga good-time, crazy-fun, straight-ahead groove.
Since their electro-whiskers had jammed all the music devices, the space-chinchillas didnt know anything about Earth music. But when they heard Rose and the Beats, they leapt to their feet.
WOW!
Next thing you know they were all dancing, shaking their furry space-behinds like there was no tomorrow.
	What is THIS?! they shouted.
Why, rock and roll! Ginger Wiggleham answered.
We LOVE it! they said. Weeee-HAW!
The Mayor jumped up. Do you love it enoughto stay?
Oh HECK yeah! Zigmucks answered. We gotta learn how to make music like this! Forget the yardwork. Dig-dog-daggit, that is one hot lick!
So the townsfolk joined in as the Beats burned their way from one song to another, earth-chinchillas and space-chinchillas rocking together in a boogie-woogie jubilee. And they kept at it till long after the moon rose over the silver-black starshipin fact, till everyone was too tired to do anything but smile.
Except Arko. He may have been the oldest chinchilla in town, but he danced all the way home, cackling, Told ya! Told ya!
