	The Chosen One

	by

	Michelle Laliberte

Chuqui Llantu knew this day might come. For two new moons, there had been no rain. Great famine had come to the village.
Chuqui had been selected as a Sun Maiden or Chosen One at the age of eight. It was a great honor for Chuqui and her family to be aclla, or chosen. For the past six years, she lived in a special house or convent called acllahuasi. Chuqui, now fourteen, was never permitted to go outside of the acllahuasi's walls or even to see her family. Today, the elderly maidens prepared her for a long journey. They gave her a newly woven cloak made from the finest alpaca wool.
"Do not be afraid, Chuqui," said one of the elderly maidens. "You are so beautiful. Surely the God Viracocha will be pleased. Our famine must end soon or we will not survive."
"I cannot help feeling scared and alone," Chuqui said. She wiped her almond-shaped eyes.
"Do not let the uillac uma see your sadness. You must be brave, or the Inca will consider this a dishonor." The maiden gently combed Chuqui's long black hair, tieing it with colorful ribbons woven especially for her.
"I know it is an honor for me and my family. I only wish that I could see them once more."
The elderly maiden smiled. "You must not worry, my child. You will see your family again."
Chuqui wondered what she meant.
The uillac uma and other priests arrived. As the head priest, the uillac uma wore a special tiara decorated with brightly colored feathers and a sun of gold. His suit was made of the finest white wool with red embroidery. It sparkled with precious stones and gold ornaments.
Chuqui knew it was now time to begin the long journey to the sacred peak of Mount Ampato, home of their creator, God Viracocha. The priests had large wrapped bundles tied securely to their backs. Chuqui wondered why so many objects were needed. She hugged the elderly maiden who whispered, "Be brave my child."
Chuqui and the priests walked up the gravel pathway leading to the mountain. The sun shined brightly overhead, warming Chuqui's face. This was a good sign from the sun god, Inti. Chuqui had missed being outside. The fresh smell of the mountain air, crisp and light, filled her lungs. She felt warm in her newly woven cloak.
Chuqui and the priests soon came to a path made of stone steps leading up the side of the mountain. Careful not to let the uillac uma see her, Chuqui glanced back towards the city, scanning the thatched roofs of the adobe houses, hoping to catch a last glimpse of her family. She hesitated, then slowly lifted her sandal-clad feet from step to step, making sure to hold her head high. Memories of her childhood raced through her mind.
After hours of step climbing, Chuqui and the priests reached the second level of their journey. The cloak, which had kept Chuqui uncomfortably warm a few hours ago, provided little protection from the mountain's bitter coldness. Fierce gales stung Chuqui's face, tearing her eyes. Her stomach ached from hunger and her mouth felt like cotton. Chuqui glanced back at the uillac uma who trudged along as if he could not feel the intense cold. He appeared so much stronger than she, Chuqui thought. He must have made this trip many times before.
Her thoughts returned to her family again. She knew they would be proud of her. She imagined what it would be like if she had not been a Chosen One. Chuqui quickly changed her thoughts from this, for it made her sad. She had to be strong, so as not to dishonor the Inca and her family.
By now, Chuqui's hands and feet were swollen. She could no longer feel the sting of the wind, for her face was numb. Tears froze instantly and fell away like jewels. Unable to breathe sufficiently, she took very deep, rapid breaths. Her lungs ached from trying. Chuqui, tired and dizzy from the altitude, kept loosing her footing. Several times, she thought she saw someone watching them from the path ahead. She must be seeing things, she thought. Finally, Chuqui and the priests reached their destination, the summit of Mount Ampato.
All but the uillac uma quickly unpacked their bundles. Chuqui watched as they prepared her final resting place. The priests piled rocks around in a circle, making a shelter. Chuqui thought how warm it would feel surrounded by those rocks. The uillac uma sang and chanted words Chuqui had never heard before. Her legs quivered.
The uillac uma painted Chuqui's face red. He then handed her an ewer.
"Drink Chosen One and you shall soon see the gods!" Chuqui hesitantly drank from the ewer. The drink was sweet and thick and very cold. She drank until it was gone.
Chuqui watched as the priests finished her rocky tomb. Her heart pounded and her stomach was in her throat. Chuqui glanced back at the mountain trail. For a moment, she envisioned herself running away with all the strength she had left. But Chuqui knew she could never escape. That would desecrate her people, as well as her family.
Chuqui's heart pounded faster. She couldn't believe her eyes. Grandmother Tantu, whom she loved so deeply, stood before her. Grandmother had died shortly before Chuqui became a Chosen One.
"I have been waiting so long to see you again, Chuqui. Our family is so proud." Chuqui quickly noticed that only she could see and hear Grandmother Tantu.
"Have you come to be with me, Grandmother?"
"Yes, Chuqui. I will take you into the next life. I will protect you."
The uillac uma motioned for Chuqui to kneel down within the tomb. Chuqui felt very sleepy. She pulled her legs up to her chest and folded her arms around them tightly as she was told. The priests laid several stone sculptures of llamas, gold and turquoise jewelry and a gold mask of the sun god, Inti, around her feet.
Lastly, the uillac uma wrapped Chuqui in a woven blanket. As the priests closed off the tomb entrance, Chuqui closed her eyes.
She saw her family once again as the elderly maiden had said. Everyone was happy. Chuqui was happy too. Then Grandmother Tantu walked towards her with open arms.

  The End
