Dear friends at Eklavya,

I became aware of your good work through the website of John Fox (https://thejohnfox.com/2016/03/children-book-publishers/) and wish to query you about a picture book that is a collaborative, Mexican-American project about migration. I append the summary here to see if this project might be of interest to Eklavya. The migrant crisis is a global one and this book offers young readers insights into the real reasons people undertake the dangerous journey into the unknown. This project is available in Spanish and English. Artwork samples and a full manuscript are available for review.

SUMMARY

MIGRANT MARIPOSAS
Summary A tiny mariposa (butterfly) born in Canada migrates to the South. She is escaping the cold and accomplishes an amazing feat: she makes it all the way to Mexico! She stays there to regain her strength before her return journey. On her way back North, she will lay her little eggs all along the route and ensure the future of her species.
A little girl named Mary Poza born in Honduras migrates to the North. She is escaping poverty and violence in her homeland and sets out with her parents on a frightening and exhausting journey. They push on, hoping they can reach the United States and find a better life there. The little family's future is very uncertain.
The two travelers meet in Michoacán, México where they share a brief moment of joyful understanding and friendship.
Migrant Mariposas is an adventure story that weaves together lessons about science and society in a subtle and poetic way.
Objective: to raise awareness of the forced migration caused by the desolation engulfing Central America that pushes the people who live there to embark on a journey into the unknown, an act that is more about survival than personal ambition.
Readership: Although the book is written for a reading audience between the ages of 6 and 12, the range can be extended to younger children and adult readers; the rich illustrations offer a corresponding narrative. This book can be published in parallel English and Spanish language editions.
