They are members of the Pardhi community tribe, the British declared them to be a criminal tribe under the Criminal Tribes act 1871. Traditionally a nomadic hunting tribe they were associated with poaching. In 1952 the Indian government declassified them as criminal but they still receive discrimination and harrassment by the police. In this slum most of the families make their living from ragpicking. The children are often held by the police and only released on payment of around $50 which the family is obliged to pay if it does not want to pay expensive legal fees.
