<div align=justify><font face="Segoe UI" class="ws12">इस बार चर्चा हाथ से किए जाने वाले श्रम की। अपनी कला व हुनर से कुछ नया गढ़ने के बाद भी हाथ से काम करने वाले श्रमिकों, कारीगरों को समाज में वो दर्जा नहीं मिला जिनके वो हकदार हैं। हालाँकि उनके कामों और उनके योगदान को सामने लाने के कुछेक प्रयास समय-समय पर हुए हैं। ऐसी ही कुछ कोशिशें एकलव्य ने भी अपने प्रकाशनों के ज़रिए की है। उन्हीं में से एक है कांचा आइलैया द्वारा लिखित किताब हमारे समय में श्रम की गरिमा। इसमें आदिवासियों, चर्मकारों, कुम्हारों, बुनकरों, धोबियों, नाइयों जैसी श्रम करने वाली जातियों और समुदायों के बारे में ज़िक्र है जिन्होंने शुरुआती विज्ञान और तकनीक को जन्म दिया। इसके बावजूद हमारे समाज के जातिगत ढाँचे में उनके श्रम को कोई महत्व नहीं दिया जाता है। कांचा अपनी इस किताब में नाइयों के विज्ञान, उनकी कलाओं और हुनर की चर्चा करते हुए कहते हैं,</font></div>

<div align=justify><font face="SimHei" class="ws12">बाल काटने की वैज्ञानिक प्रक्रिया तो नाइयों ने ही विकसित की। आधुनिक युग के पहले नाइयों के अलावा किसी भी अन्य जाति के लोग बीमारियों से पीड़ित लोगों को नहीं छूते थे। आधुनिक चिकित्सा विज्ञान के अस्तित्व में आने तक नाई ही कई छोटी-मोटी शल्यक्रियाएँ करते थे। शरीर के उस हिस्से पर जहाँ शल्यचिकित्सा होनी होती है</font><font face="Segoe UI Light" class="ws12">,</font><font face="SimHei" class="ws12"> बालों की उपस्थिति के कारण संक्रमण हो सकता है। इसलिए शल्यक्रिया से पहले बालों को पूरी तरह साफ करना अनिवार्य होता है। यह चलन आज भी जारी है। अत</font><font face="Verdana" class="ws12">:</font><font face="SimHei" class="ws12"> नाइयों ने अपने काम के अलावा विश्व के पहले चिकित्सकों और शल्यकर्मी की दोहरी भूमिका निभाई। </font></div>

<div align=justify><font face="SimHei" class="ws12">इसी प्रकार नाई समुदाय की महिलाओं ने गाँवों में प्रसव करवाने की ज़िम्मेदारी निभाई है। उत्तर भारत में वे दाई कहलाती हैं और प्रसूति-विशेषज्ञ का काम करते हुए प्रसव में महिलाओं की मदद करती हैं। आज भी भारत में 50 प्रतिशत से ज़्यादा प्रसूतियाँ इन अति-कुशल ग्रामीण दाइयों द्वारा कराई जाती हैं।</font></div>

The rest of the world grew at something around 3 percent in the last 20 years. So India grew at an impressive rate. Now you look at the data on poverty. You will see absolutely something striking and this will explain what I am trying to say. 20-25 percent of the poorest people in the world were in India in 1980. Since then, India has grown twice the world average. This means that rest of the world including sub-Saharan Africa reduced poverty faster than India though they grew slower. One way to link output growth with the question of inequality is to try to explain this. The rest of the world have reduced poverty faster and grown slower!</font></div>
